THIS WEEK:
- The House and Senate return today.
- The House Republican Conference will meet today to discuss a strategy on a CR to fund the government. Government funding expires at midnight on Friday and negotiators are no closer to a deal than they were last week given DACA and spending caps. Republicans will need Democratic votes to pass a short-term extension in the Senate - and maybe even the House where leaders are facing potential rebellions by defense hawks and conservatives.
- President Trump will meet with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev today and will participate in a press event and working lunch together.
- House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin will continue to meet on DACA. Our view is that this is the only group to watch for contours of a deal to emerge on the immigration issue that continues to vex both chambers of Congress and both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.
- On Wednesday, Senator Jeff Flake is scheduled to deliver a speech critical of his Republican party and Trump. Trump will annpunce his "fake news" awards.
- The Senate is expected to consider the House-passed FISA bill.
