Takeaway: Could it be PhyCo all over again or has the practice of medicine gotten use to bearing risk? Will Direct Contracting Make it Easier?

Call Invite May 20th @ 12:30PM | Direct Contracting: Roll-up, Blow-up or "This time is different?" - 20210519Direct Contracting

There have been a string of IPOs and SPACs – JWS/Cano, DFHT/IMC, ALHC, OSH, PRVA -  for companies focused on risk-bearing physicians practices, calling to mind the roll-up blow-up days of yore. Around old timers in health care, the word PhyCor still gives the shivers.

So it is easy to dismiss these companies as headed for the same fate.

However, a few things really have changed since the 1990s. Insurers are increasingly requiring physicians to bear risk for their patients' care expense. Technology that enables better clinical decision-making has flourished. Policy has encouraged primary care delivery like never before.

All that doesn’t mean one of them cannot be the next PhyCor but maybe, just maybe, this time is different. We will sort it out using our latest data trackers, a little history and a deep examination of policy trends driving the change.
