Takeaway: In charting the future of technology in medicine, a clear winner is behavioral health. Where does that leave the Brick & Mortar providers?

The jury is slowly wandering back to the courthouse on the matter of telehealth. Most doctors have made clear their preference for in-person visits especially when their patients have been away so long during COVID. Practitioners of behavioral health are different. They are trained, not to physically examine the patient, but to talk and observe and that lends their specialty rather nicely to providing services in a wide range of modalities, including virtual visits and digital communication like apps. That point was made very clear in last week's hearing at the Health Subcommittee of House Ways and Means.

The demand for behavioral health services the last year has grown dramatically. Not only have the circumstances of pandemic demanded it across the board, the young - the first generation to have completely shed themselves of the stigma associated with mental health treatment  - have suffered disproportionately from career interruptions and reduced living conditions. While TDOC recognized the opportunity early, the market is filling up with all manner of solutions that call into question whether the brick and mortar model, whose roots go back to the late 19th century, can survive in its current condition.

Tomorrow, venture capitalist, Marcus Whitney and I will be discussing the plethora of potential disrupters which are finding ample funding to execute on their opportunities for disruption.
