Takeaway: Distributed clinical trials are a hot thing in VC-land & to be fair, IQVA, LH and others are getting into the act. Will it work?

We started work on a theme around distributed clinical trials after listening to a really interesting presentation at the What's Next for Health Care conference hosted by Matthew Holt and Jessica DaMassa. One presentation, moderated by Craig Lipset from the Decentralized Trials and Research Alliance, featured a very interesting panel, including Christine Lemke from Evidation. Ms Lemke's comments were particularly noteworthy on the topics of Real World Evidence, synthetic controls and how all those nifty remote monitoring devices may play a significant role in separating clinical trials from the medical research centers in the U.S.

Aside from being more convenient and less expensive, decentralized clinical trials provide some hope that trial subjects will diversify away from the most common demographic - middle-age to older white men - and look at research questions that have been difficult to answer for lack of willing subjects.

Who better to walk through the implications of such a significant change in how trials might change and what it means for health care than our friend, Marcus Whitney, co-founder of Jumpstart Health Investors and founder and General Partner of Jumpstart Nova, the first Black healthcare venture fund in America, launched in 2020.

Topics:

  • Policy shifts, From funding research at non-traditional locations like HBCUs; to mandating representation by certain populations; to acceptance of Real World Evidence at the FDA like HBCUs, policy is directing research entities to new and different ways of conducting trials.
  • Genetic Data. One solution advocated by ME and others seeks to deploy genetic data to make trials faster and more diverse.
  • EHR Records. Clinical data with a longitudinal record to create a synthetic control arm, a huge time and expense saver.
  • Remote Patient Monitoring. Enroll people in a remote monitoring study where you make available glucose monitors, heart, BP, etc. across a study population to collect “real world evidence” relevant to the study.
  • Approaches of IQVA and LH
  • Impacts on traditional CROs like CRL

We look forward to you joining us.
