On-premise trends stronger than pre-pandemic (SAM)

According to CGA, a market research firm, on-premise velocity was up 60% YOY for the week ended Aug. 7. Across the states tracked (Florida, Illinois, California, New York, and Texas), both value and sales velocity outperformed 2019. However, average outlet sales trends have leveled off in the most recent two weeks after months of improvement. Texas had the strongest growth with sales velocity up 25% compared to the same week in 2019 but was down 4% compared to the week ended July 31. Texas’ sales velocity was still up 47% YOY. Over the last two weeks, Florida's declines down 3% and 4%, respectively, were the largest declines of the year. Florida’s sales velocity is still up 21% compared to 2019 and 66% YOY. New York’s sales velocity was up 84% YOY, while California was up 85% against easy comparisons last year. California’s sales velocity is still up 20% to 2019.

Canadian beer sales flattish (TAP)

Total beer volumes in Canada were down 5.0% YOY in June, decelerating slightly from the 4.8% decrease in May. Canadian domestic beer volumes increased 2.2% in June, accelerating from the 0.8% growth in March. Imported beer volume fell 39.4% in June, decelerating from the 35.9% decrease in May. Export beer volumes grew 68.1% in May. Canada had some of the longest indoor dining restrictions in the world. Ontario allowed indoor dining on July 16.

Wine sales decelerate in July (VWE)

U.S. wine sales for the year ended July 31 increased 6% compared to the prior year. Sales in July increased by 20% YOY, decelerating from the 25.6% growth in June. Sales in June at $4.2B were the third-highest month since January 2020. Wine sales have accelerated since the re-opening of on-premise, as seen in the chart below.
