The Global Vaccine Rollout Is Underway - 11.16.2020 vaccine whale cartoon

With the 90-year-old woman in the UK becoming the first person vaccinated (outside of a clinical trial setting), and given that she didn’t scream out in pain and her arm remained attached, attention is turning to vaccine access and supply.

The US has secured 800 million doses, but only 100 million of them from Pfizer. Our population is ~330 million, and only two vaccines are on approval’s doorstep.

Per our AM note yesterday and commentary on recent Position Monitor Updates, we don’t think that everyone must be vaccinated to afford the U.S. Medical Economy time to manage this pandemic AND allow for a return to a more “normal” state of being.

Getting the 65+yo and other high-risk Americans coverage, as well as a good chunk of the medical professionals and essential workers that are willing to take it, should meaningfully suppress the curve.

It will also help drive the snapback of in-person care and hopefully suppress the recent rise in acuity (the latter will take time). We would note that the U.S. has been aggressive in procuring supply: After nearly $1B in research funding, Moderna takes $1.5B coronavirus vaccine order from U.S.

If our read on the setup is right, there should be meaningful tailwinds for some of our top long ideas, including AMN on the staffing side and ONEM as primary care evolves.
