Takeaway: Must watch conversation about the transformation of EHRs, adoption of new technologies and whether pharmacies will become a center of care

CERN, TDOC, CVS, AAPL, WMT, DGRX | Replay | Matthew Holt : SMAC Technologies & Health (+Kindness) - Matthew Holt

The interview is by far my favorite in our effort to "learn out loud" to better understand how health policy and regulations are (finally!) beginning to show signs of accepting the 21st century's realities, we have invited "health care curmudgeon" Matthew Holt to Hedgeye TV to talk about the new technologies that have emerged in the past decade or so based on "SMAC." These underlying technologies are Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud. According to Matthew, the term SMAC has been used predominantly outside the US, but useful for us to distinguish these now mature "new" information technologies from the enterprise-based client-server technologies that preceded them and are still prevalent especially in health care enterprises.

To this framework Matthew has added a couple of things to complete what he calls the "SMACK health puzzle." One is another S, for Sensors. The "Internet of things" includes dozens of technologies being used for health-related purposes. The other is a K for kindness, always an important ingredient for successful health outcomes.

Of course, what we all want to know is when technologies that make our lives more productive will do the same for our health care system.

About Matthew Holt: Best known as the founder of The Health Care Blog and (with Indu Subaiya) the Health 2.0 conferences, I now split my time between them, Catalyst @ Health 2.0 (not owned by HIMSS), and the SMACK.health Advisory service for health tech startups,

Health 2.0 is the leading conference series showcasing frontier technologies in health care. In April 2017 HIMSS bought the conference side of Health 2.0 which I am now only peripherally involved with. The Catalyst @ Health 2.0 division (not part of HIMSS) runs challenges, code-a-thons, innovation programs, and market intelligence, and owns the SourceDB which has more health tech companies in it than you can imagine!

The Health Care Blog has been a leading source of opinion, news and interviews about health and health technology since 2003. It also features my short but sweet "Health in 2 Point 00" videos with Jessica DaMassa which runs down the latest in Digital Health deals, and the weekly #THCBGang live video/podcast where I wrangle a group of health care know-it-alls.

And at SMACK.health I advise around 25 startups navigating the health care world.
