For a while it appeared Airbnb would prove to be a major headwind for hotels. But as data has come in over the last couple years, it might not be the disaster some made it out to be.

According to Gaming, Lodging & Leisure analyst Sean Jenkins on a recent episode of The Macro Show:

“Our thesis on Airbnb is that growth has slowed materially. It’s kind of a non-event for at least the next 12 months. It’s not really a headwind for the Marriotts and the Hiltons of the world given that they don’t really own hotels.”

Hedgeye Internet & Media analyst Hesham Shaaban added that vacation rentals in Europe aren’t a new thing and could support the idea that Airbnb isn’t as big of a threat as it was once made out to be.
