Takeaway: In the middle of retail earnings season we’ll highlight why we think you fade the consumer rally and short retail.

Our Macro Team presented its mid-quarter update call this week, and with the economy likely to see multiple quarters of growth and inflation slowing, the US outlook is decidedly bearish, particularly in consumer discretionary.  As we look at the trends in retail earnings so far, our outlook over 6-12 months, and forward earnings expectations in the context of current valuations, we think the time is right to play whack a mole on short side for retail.

On Wednesday August 17th at 2pm we’re hosting a Mid-Quarter Retail Themes Black Book dive in on 2Q22 retail earnings season results so far and industry wide takeaways.  We look at where earnings revisions trends stand and contextualize expectations, dive in on subcategory trends, look at the B&M vs ecommerce channel setup, and ultimately detail out why the market isn’t appreciating the earnings and multiple risk for much of the consumer discretionary space.
