Takeaway: Over the past few years, we have held several calls with Jonathon, and his views on the industry are always enlightening.

We will be hosting a call with Jonathan Maze, Editor-in-Chief of Restaurant Business, on 04/19 @ 2 PM.  Mr. Maze sits on the front line of everything restaurant and has some of the best contacts across the industry.  We look to catch up on his current take on the restaurant industry!  We will address these and other topics on the call:

  • The new virtual restaurant - The influence of the metaverse, an interactive virtual reality world, is extending into food service. Wingstop, McDonald’s, and Panera Bread all recently filed trademarks to sell items in the metaverse, including downloadable virtual goods such as non-fungible tokens or virtual food and drink. In some cases, these downloadable goods will be redeemable for actual items at a real, physical location.  CMG recently did a burrito promotion in the metaverse.  What is the outlook for consumer adoption?
  • Are Ghost kitchens a viable business model?  Do ghost brands in traditional kitchens make business sense?
  • How has the industry developed from the start of the pandemic until today?
  • Will delivery remain a growth segment of the industry and what will the industry look like a year from now?
  • Will there be an economic cycle with the restaurant industry (consensus estimates suggest continued strength)?
  • How will aggressive pricing impact traffic? Are there any signs of consumer resistance?
