NY Social Equity Move iS A POSitive

A positive development in NY to help those impacted the most by the war on drugs, along with the $200 million funds to help early applicants get started. The program could be at risk of starting on time due to the lack of federal protection that would have been available if the Democrats had passed SAFE. The politics of cannabis continues to hurt those impacted by the war on drugs.

The policy, to be announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul today, is part of a concerted push to assure that early business owners in the state’s projected billion-dollar marijuana industry will be members of communities that have been affected by the nation’s decades-long war on drugs. New York State will soon announce plans to usher in its first outlets for retail sales of marijuana by the end of the year, giving applicants access to stockpiles of the drug grown by local farmers and offering sweeteners like new storefronts leased by the state. To be one of the state’s first licensed retailers, you or a member of your family must have been convicted of a marijuana-related offense. NYTIMES

NO SAFE AGAIN

As we said above, NY would have an easier time rolling out Recreational sales and its SE program if SAFE had passed.  @SenSchumer continues to put politics ahead of his constituents in New York.

The House is expected today to vote on a $1.5T spending bill and legislation that would allow banks to do business with cannabis companies isn't in it, Marijuana Moment reports. "I appreciate this bill," Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) said during a House Rules Committee meeting Wednesday morning. "I hope the next one has SAFE Banking in it." Perlmutter is the lead sponsor of the SAFE Banking Act. When SAFE was approved by the House as part of a defense funding bill last year, it got stripped from that bill in December in the Senate.  The congressman has been trying multiple times to get the legislation passed and is not giving up!
