Headline: Commodity stocks tick down sequentially in Oct. as % of prior year levels
The USDA late last week released its cold storage commodity stock data for October as it relates to Best Idea Short COLD:
- Updated data presented in Figure 1 below.
- Stock levels ticked down a bit sequentially q/q in October to 93% as a % of prior year levels, in a month in which absolute levels increased as part of the typical pre-holiday seasonal build.
- The trend looks bad and is showing no signs of sustained recovery despite the easing y/y comps. November will be an equally important month in gauging the pace of throughput recovery, if there is one to be found at this point in the cycle.
- As a reminder, cold storage commodity stock throughput directly impacts COLD's top line particularly on the services side of the business, saying nothing of increasing wage and margin pressures which just started to appear in 3Q21. We continue to see the most likely scenario as a "kitchen sinking" of FY22 guidance to set a very low bar for the new management team next year.
