Takeaway: Please join us for a Q&A with Jumpstart Health Investors & cliexa - the market is moving fast, who is leading or keeping pace?

Overview

Jumpstart Health's Vic Gatto and Founder & CEO of cliexa, Mehmet Kazgan, will join Hedgeye Health Care Sector Head Tom Tobin in the studio for a discussion about the rapid evolution of digital health platforms and telemedicine, which has become a household term over the past five years.  However, many of the largest and most successful companies are generalist telemedicine platforms. Teladoc (TDOC) and Amwell (AMWL) fall into this category.  These firms rode the wave of broad market adoption to large valuations, but the generalist approach is losing value now that the market is on the back side of the adoption curve.

Due to the pandemic, telemedicine is no longer "special."  There are a plethora of undifferentiated apps and tech-enabled services wanting to address urgent care needs, manage weight, write scripts, deliver talk therapy, etc., and patients and providers have become familiar with virtual interactions.  While this represents a huge step forward in the quality of care, it's a challenge to the original telemedicine carve-outs.  Broad adoption and telemedicine fluency are leading to a reintegration of the service into the overall continuum of care, and in many cases, we are seeing a new wave of digital health coming forward that brings all the technical capabilities (telephony, video, data, apps, and wearables) into the fold to empower and extend physicians' bandwidth and reach.  These new tools are customized by physician specialty and offerings are tailored to fit the needs of focused patient populations.

About the Speakers

Vic Gatto has been an investor in healthcare and technology since 2001.  He has made over 200 investments in early-stage innovation companies in the areas of healthcare services, medical devices, diagnostic tools, technology, and data analytics.  Vic co-founded Jumpstart Health Investors in 2014. Designed to be a new type of healthcare investment platform, the firm leverages four complementary business units to convey an unfair advantage to investors, innovators and industry.  Before Jumpstart, Vic served as a Partner at two different venture capital firms, focusing his investment activity primarily in healthcare services and technology. In the 1990s, before switching to the investor side of the table, he co-founded and subsequently sold a software company.

Vic was the seed investor in Change Healthcare, which is the target of a $13B acquisition by UNH.  He helped grow the company from a concept to the multi-billion enterprise it is today. Vic served on the Board of Directors for seven years.  He also joined Change in a full-time capacity as President during a critical transition period.  As President, Vic helped the original Founders define the skills needed to lead the company forward.  He then recruited a two-person team of Chairman and CEO to leave a large publicly traded healthcare company to lead the growth of Change Healthcare.

Mehmet Kazgan is the Founder and CEO of cliexa, an end-to-end virtual health platform offering providers integrated clinical intake, automated documentation, and remote patient monitoring solutions tailored to practices in multiple-subspecialty settings.  He has been a technology leader for over 20 years working with companies such as Microsoft, Google, PayPal, Visa, Philips, Starz, Seagate, and Aetna. During his hands-on software development career, he gained extensive experience in firmware and software development, FDA-regulated quality assurance processes, native mobile application development, release engineering, and DevOps infrastructure with Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. After working for Aetna as VP of Engineering, Mehmet started Boomtown Accelerator program to launch cliexa in May 2016.  Since the launch of cliexa, Mehmet has been a mentor, advisor, judge and speaker at accelerator and incubator programs, State Grant Programs, Non-Profit organizations, and research institutions. Mehmet also is a chairman of the board at New Health Services, an Integrated Pain Treatment and Surgery Center with 70+ employees and multi-disciplinary services including Behavioral Health, Physical Therapy, Urinalysis Lab, and Diagnostics Center.
