Fireside Chat w/Andrew Freedman

On September 9, I sat down for a conversation with Andrew Freedman, sector head of Communications at Hedgeye. The last time Andrew and I got together was in November 2021 where we discussed the Online Dating Industry, Interactive Media (incl. AR/VR), and the future role of social media (Click Here for Replay). Before that, we sat down in June 2020 for a conversation we titled  "Media in the Pandemic Age," examining how the crisis impacted generational consumption trends.

This time around, we dove into three topics:

  1. Attention Recession - As people venture outside again, media firms must navigate an “attention recession." We examined consumer engagement trends as the world reopens and what categories have been forever changed by the pandemic (winners/losers).
  2. Digital Advertising Trends - How durable is the post-COVID surge in digital ad spending? We discussed recent trends, including the shift to e-commerce (the role of live streaming) and the growing experimentation of product placements.
  3. Creator Economy - From Facebook to Spotify, all the major digital platforms have launched tools to support creators in the last year. Is the "creator economy" just a new name for the "gig economy" or something more? What role do influencers play? We discussed the demographic trends underpinning growth in platforms like Twitch, TikTok, and Patreon.
  4. Antitrust Threats - The bipartisan attack on Communications (along with Big Tech) is heating up, with new FTC chief Lina Khan threatening Facebook, the House Judiciary Committee approving several new antitrust bills, and the EU preparing sweeping actions against Google and Apple. Who will come out on top?
