Cruise Survey Shows Leaks In Post-Covid Recovery - 8 11 2021 12 30 55 PM

Cruise Critic was out with some survey results yesterday that covered some hot button issues that the cruise lines are facing these days – Covid testing, mandatory vaccinations, mask mandates, and overall confidence in the protocols implemented.

Per the survey summary:

  • “More than 60 percent of the respondents said they felt comfortable with both masks onboard and testing before cruises -- the safer the better.  Slightly more than 24 percent said they were fine with testing, but not masks, while 4 percent said they would wear a mask but not take a COVID-19 test. Less than 12 percent said wouldn't cruise if mask and testing requirements were in place.”
  • “The Delta variant has caused some concern among Cruise Critic respondents. About 31 percent said they would prefer to wait to cruise until COVID-19 cases are lower in the U.S. Another 35 percent said they were watching how the Delta variant affects the cruise experience. Thirty-four percent said they were comfortable sailing right now.”
  • ~58% had already booked a cruise over the last 6 months. ~57% said they planned to keep their booking. 37% said they might cancel, depending on what happens in the next few weeks

The article attempts to spin the results as a positive since 60% of the respondents seemed comfortable with virtually all the protocols and adjustments, but we see it a little differently.

Not to be negative but they survey also indicated that close to 40% of respondents take issue with some component of the newer protocols and changes, and close to 40% of the respondents are contemplating cancelling their cruise?

Not exactly bullish from our seat, and yes, we understand that 2H’21 is a throwaway but forward bookings and ability to hold prices for 1H’21 could be impacted on the margin.

It’s also important to note that the survey results are based off Cruise Critic readers, which mostly would incorporate repeat / experienced cruisers, so this consternation doesn’t even reflect how the marginal / new-to-cruise customer is thinking about the current situation.
