Curaleaf Expands NJ Presence

Curaleaf is a US MSO Long.

Curaleaf announced the opening of Curaleaf Edgewater Park, the company's second dispensary in New Jersey and 107th nationwide. Recreational sales in New Jersey are expected to begin sometime in 2022. The dispensary is 7,640 Sq.Ft. and is conveniently located off Route 130 South. In addition to the dispensary, Curaleaf will also open its second cultivation facility in the state, which has already completed its first harvest and is fully operational. "We are thrilled to grow alongside New Jersey's flourishing medical community and expand access to best-in-class cannabis products to patients in Edgewater Park," said Joe Bayern, CEO of Curaleaf. "We continue to work closely with state leaders and regulators to create a successful and sustainable adult-use market, and our expansion positions us to meet the market's increasing needs while creating hundreds of new jobs in the state."

DC Marijuana Protections

House Democrats went against Joe Biden and approved a funding bill that includes provisions that protect banks from being punished for working with marijuana businesses and allows Washington DC to legalize cannabis sales. Currently, recreational marijuana is legalized, but sales cannot occur (some businesses use loopholes to sell). Biden proposed continuing the longstanding Republican-led rider, which prevented the city from regulating adult-use sales. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said in a press release that she’s “very pleased the bill respects D.C.’s right to self-government by allowing D.C. to spend its local funds as it sees fit, including on…recreational marijuana commercialization.” The bill is essentially a mini-safe act for the district, showing its effectiveness in a small environment.

RI Getting Warmer

The Rhode Island Senate approved a marijuana legalization bill that would allow possession and sales of cannabis to individuals 21+. This the furthest a legalization bill has ever gotten in Rhode Island, so this is a large milestone. Unfortunately, the bill’s passage in the Senate comes in contrast to recent comments from House leadership, with the speaker saying last week that it’s “possible we will return sometime in the summer or fall” to tackle legalization. He said the priority is to pass the budget this month. This month, the governor also said that he “wouldn’t be surprised if this is something that gets carried over maybe to a fall session.” Although the bill will likely get pushed to later in the year, RI shows promise in the House with 65 democrats and just 9 republicans. Therefore, we will likely get full legalization sometime later this year.
