Canada Proposes Flavored Vape Restriction

Valen is a Canadian LP Long.

Health Canada, responsible for overseeing cannabis in Canada, has proposed restrictions around the flavoring in cannabis extracts and vape pens starting in 2022. The proposal would restrict inhaled cannabis from having a flavor "other than the flavor of cannabis" for both medical and recreational purposes. It is unclear, however, how Health Canada could enforce these proposed rules. “Ultimately, it seems Health Canada is not proposing to ban non-cannabis derived natural (botanical) or synthetic flavoring agents such as terpenes,” he continues. “Rather, they seem to want to limit the use —or promotion—of flavoring agents that are not “typical to cannabis,” said Tom UIanowski, the VP of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs at Nextleaf Labs. The move is very similar to the US ban on flavored vaping products, which went into effect in 2020. This was enacted to prevent underage use, which is rampant with flavored vape products. Vapes make up about 80% of sales for Valens, which is at the top of our Canadian LP long list. It is unclear what percent of Valens vapes have additional flavorings which are added.

The top sales of Vapes on the Ontario Cannabis store mostly contain flavored vape products. These companies will have to either change their product or discontinue if these proposals take effect and are enforceable. The 9th best-selling vape product on the site is Valen's product, but it appears it does not contain any flavorings.

BC Cannabis Delivery

As of July 15th, Weed delivery will be allowed in Canada's third-largest province with 4.6 Million citizens. Until now, cannabis could only be bought on the provincial government's online website, and the product would be delivered by mail. The province will now allow private retailers to deliver, allowing for a far quicker option. “Since the federal legalization of non-medical cannabis, we’ve been working to support a strong and diverse cannabis industry, shrink the illicit market and keep products out of the hands of children and youth,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. Pure Sunfarms (VFF) has the largest share of BC sales.
