WASHINGTON WEEK AHEAD + CATALYST CALENDAR - dc policy weekahead

THIS WEEK:

  • Last week we introduced a Catalyst Calendar with major policy dates and deadlines in Washington in addition to Hedgeye’s policy events. We will be updating the calendar as information changes and new dates are put on the books.   • The House is out of session and won’t return until next Monday, September 25th.
  • The Senate leaves after work Wednesday and will also return Monday, September 25th.
  • The UN General Assembly is gathering in New York City this week. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley will be joined by President Trump and world leaders from 193 countries. They are expected to discuss North Korea, Russia, climate change, and peace talks in the Middle East.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18:

  • Led by Senator John McCain (R-AZ), the Senate is expected to finish the National Defense Authorization Act.
  • President Trump is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19:

  • President Trump is scheduled to give a speech to the UN General Assembly. He will discuss protecting the American people, promoting American prosperity, and promoting accountability and sovereignty, according to National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster.
  • The FOMC begins its quarterly meeting.
  • The Senate Finance Committee is holding a hearing on business tax reform. Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) is a key player in negotiating details of the reform with the White House.
  • The Senate is scheduled to take up an initial vote on Noel Francisco’s nomination to be Solicitor General.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20:

  • The FOMC gives its quarterly press briefing to present the group’s current economic projections and policy decisions.
  • The FERC will hold its first regular business meeting, in six months on September 20th, at which project approval and other decisions are announced.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21:

  • Hedgeye Call | Quarterly Policy Themes Call - September 21 @ 2pm: We will be hosting our Quarterly Policy Themes Call Thursday, September 21st at 2 pm. Led by our Macro Policy Analyst JT Taylor and Health Care Analyst Emily Evans, this presentation will be a conversation with our policy team as they provide insight on major policy issues developing in Washington. It is crunch time for Congress who has a jammed packed legislative agenda ahead.   • Canada and the European Union begin their Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The two agreed on September 21st to start the provisional application of the agreement, which will allow for all of the necessary implementing measures to be completed before the agreement begins. This deal will cut 98% of tariffs between Canada and the EU and will boost trade and investment.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22:

  • Senate HELP Chair Lamar Alexander (R-TN) plans to put the final touches on a bipartisan package to stabilize insurance markets by the end of the week with the hope the Senate will pass it by the end of the month.
  • More scrutiny will come to Equifax over the data breach of as many as 143 million Americans’ information.
