THIS WEEK:
- Hurricane Irma - the president is expected to visit Florida as soon as it's safe to be there. Congressional members are expected to be out of town for the first part of the week working on recovery efforts in their home states. Congress has already passed relief funding, but we still expect this storm to headline the week.
- The House delayed voting on their final Appropriations Bills last week in order to pass President Trump’s deal to extend the debt ceiling and government spending (refresh on the deal here). They are expected to vote on the remaining eight Appropriations Bills this week and send all 12 to the Senate.
- Led by Senator John McCain (R-AZ), the Senate is expected to move the National Defense Authorization Act this week.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11:
- President Trump and FLOTUS will be remembering September 11th with a moment for silence and prayers at the White House and then visiting the Pentagon.
- It is rumored that Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dean Heller (R-NV), and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) will release the text for their block grant amendment in order to get a CBO score for repeal and replace. Get more on this effort from our Senior Health Policy Analyst Emily Evans here.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12:
- The Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will visit the White House.
- Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and the Senate HELP Committee will hear testimony from health policy experts at a hearing called “Stabilizing Premiums and Helping Individuals in the Individual Insurance Market for 2018: State Flexibility” at 10am.
- The Senate Finance Committee is holding a hearing on health care costs at 10am.
- The House Financial Services Committee is holding a hearing on curbing North Korea's behavior through economic sanctions.
- The CTIA is holding their “Mobile World Congress Americas Meeting” from today through the 14th in San Francisco. FCC officials often make industry-positive announcements at these major conferences such as on spectrum policy and infrastructure buildout rules.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13:
- Trump will meet with Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) to discuss race relations in America.
- Trump will host a bipartisan dinner with Senators at the White House.
- The Senate Budget Committee is holding a hearing on the president’s FY18 budget and revenue proposals. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin will testify.
- The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will examine the benefits of automated truck safety technology as well as automations potential impact on jobs and the economy.
- The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on the economic impact of immigration and the impact of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy onto the American workforce.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14:
- The Senate Health Committee led by Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) will hear testimony from stakeholders at 10am continuing their hearings on stabilizing premiums and insurance markets.
- The Senate Finance Committee is holding a hearing on individual tax reform at 10am including witnesses from the American Enterprise Institute.
- The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry is holding a hearing at 9:30am to discuss the 2018 Farm Bill.
- The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is holding a hearing to discuss the current crisis in Venezuela and how to promote democracy there.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15:
- One week after the massive Equifax breach became public, we expect Congressional leaders to have devised a game plan on penalties and policy changes surrounding security.
