In this latest issue of my weekly podcast, I take a quick look at the increasingly downbeat mood of global markets. The Fed spent most of last week debating what caused the Fed Funds rate blip two weeks ago while engaging in little serious discussion of whether it is responding appropriately to global economic deceleration. I discuss the historical correlation between earnings recessions and economic recessions. Moral: Yes, there are exceptions, but there's a pretty strong rule as well. And I discuss another correlation more relevant to Fed policy right now--and that is the very tight link between Fed tightening while other central banks are easing… and subsequent global downturns. We look at how Beijing is today celebrating 70 years of Communist rule in China with National Day, while Hong Kong "celebrates" it in a very different fashion. The final month countdown on Brexit is starting for PM Boris Johnson. The MPs are gunning for Boris, but BoJo is grooming himself for the ultimate arbiter: UK voters. Here at home, meanwhile, the Dems in the House are going ahead with impeachment hearings on President Trump. What motivated them? And how is it likely to play out? I discuss all this and more.
