With Chinese Vice Premier Liu He en route to Washington this week, the Trump Administration has taken a tougher stance on China trade talks while the actual timing for a summit with President Xi Jinping is in question with major issues still unresolved. We covered ground on a multitude of issues from enforcement mechanisms and IP to the future of U.S. -Sino trade relations in our call with Derek Scissors, one of the country’s top China scholars. Dr. Scissors cut to the chase with his contrarian views on the U.S.-China trade negotiations and what may lie ahead.

Scissors is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he focuses on the Chinese and Indian economies and on U.S. economic relations with Asia. He is concurrently chief economist of the China Beige Book. Scissors is the author of the China Global Investment Tracker.  Before joining AEI, Dr. Scissors was a senior research fellow in the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation and an adjunct professor of economics at George Washington University. Dr. Scissors has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, and a doctorate from Stanford University.
