Editor’s Picks: Our 8 Favorite Investing Podcasts

12/26/18 08:28AM EST

Dear Macro Show subscribers,

Happy Holidays from all of us here at Hedgeye!

We hope you’re enjoying some time off to be with your families after another successful year.

We’ve fielded many requests for finance-related podcast recommendations. Below is a collection of smart listening as you hunker down for the holidays.

Before we get to that, check out our own podcasts on iTunes.

Our catalogue of Real Conversations featuring some of the smartest minds in finance stretches back to 2010.

Meanwhile, our just-launched In the Arena podcast gives you a smart, entertaining glimpse inside our locker room to get to know our team—our wins, our failures, our unique investing process and goals. FYI .. Episode two just aired with Senior Macro analyst Darius Dale. Episode one featured CEO Keith McCullough. We think both are must-listens.

Okay, shameless plug over! Let’s get to our list of top podcasts.

MACROVOICES

Hosted by hedge fund manager Erik Townsend, MacroVoices is billed as “interviews with the brightest minds in the world of finance and macroeconomics.” It doesn’t disappoint. Townsend is a knowledgeable interviewer who knows how to extract interesting insights from his list of formidable and knowledgeable guests. We don’t always agree with the investors and market commentators who appear on MacroVoices, but it’s always humbling (and just a good risk management practice) to hear the savvy argument on the other side of the trade. Incidentally, this is also Senior Macro analyst Darius Dale’s favorite investing podcast. So there’s that too.

CAPITAL ALLOCATORS

This podcast is hosted by single-family office CIO Ted Seides. As Hedgeye devotees know, we’re all about process, process, process. So Capital Allocators was an obvious listen for us: “Meet the people who allocate vast pools of capital and the processes they employ.” If you’re interested in hearing what makes sharp people in finance tick and the circuitous career paths most of them take to get there, this podcast is for you.

ECONTALK

Skeptics of modern economics will probably love EconTalk. Russ Roberts, Research Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, hosts this podcast with more than 640 available episodes. Archived interviewees include Milton Friedman, Marc Andreessen, and Michael Lewis. The biggest vote of confidence for EconTalk? Roberts is the only interviewer we’ve ever heard Nassim Taleb compliment. Roberts probes all of his guests with professorial attention to detail on topics ranging from the psychology of happiness to emergent phenomena.

INVEST LIKE THE BEST

“Exploring the ideas, methods, and stories of people that will help you better invest your time and money.” That’s Invest Like the Best in a nutshell. It’s hosted by Patrick O'Shaughnessy, CEO of quant shop O'Shaughnessy Asset Management. What we like about this podcast is that O’Shaughnessy (who clearly is a second-order thinker) asks tough questions that dig deeper and deeper into the specifics on any topic – everything from venture capital to cryptocurrencies. A recent conversation with AQR’s Cliff Asness was a definite barn burner.

THE CURIOUS INVESTOR

This podcast is produced by AQR Capital Management. Enough said. If you’re at all interested in the history of “factor investing” and how it works this is a must listen. AQR continues to do pioneering research in the field and this podcast features many of these minds, including AQR founder Cliff Asness himself. Deep dive episodes on “Rise of the Machines,” the debate on “Active versus Passive,” and “Silly Things Investors Do,” are just a few highlights.

THE KNOWLEDGE PROJECT

We recently learned about podcast host Shane Parrish and Farnam Street. The Knowledge Project is Farnam Street’s long-form podcast about work, life and just how-to-be-a-better-person. “The Knowledge Project helps you build a world-class multi-disciplinary education that you can use to make better decisions and live a more meaningful and productive life.” Like the sound of that already? Parrish was a cybersecurity expert at Canada’s top intelligence agency before founding Farnam Street to dig into the research behind improving your mental mindset. Oh… Dan Loeb and Ray Dalio are fans of the podcast.

GRANT’S CURRENT YIELD

Whether you agree with his deeply skeptical, bearish bias or not, Jim Grant’s podcast had to make this list. Grant is one of the first journalists to counter all the bullish news coming out of Wall Street. Warning: Most of his guests clearly share his worldview. That’s fine. Grant is witty and fun to listen to and first and foremost a student of market history. Interesting perspective.

BLOOMBERG’S MASTERS IN BUSINESS

First things first. Keith – if you’re reading this, you may have just spit out your coffee. Yes, Bloomberg’s Masters In Business made this list. If you can stand blowhard Barry Ritholtz’s occasional bloviating there is one significantly redeeming quality about Masters in Business: The guests. For better or for worse, Old Wall media still attracts top Wall Street investors and Masters In Business provides a long-form podcast on which to listen to them speak. In recent interviews, Ritholtz talks to Ray Dalio, Jeremy Grantham and Howard Marks.
