DRIVING THE WEEK:
The House and Senate are both in session this week.
On Wednesday President Trump will meet with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker in addition to other European leaders. He has stood by his threats of sweeping tariffs on automobile tariffs against the European Union if his meeting does not result in what he views as a fair auto deal.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise indicated that the House will propose a series of health care bills after the August recess in an effort to bolster the Republican message headed into the midterm elections. Under consideration: “the Protect Medical Innovation Act, repealing the medical device tax; the Increasing Access to Lower Premium Plans and Expanding Health Savings Accounts Act; and the Restoring Access to Medication and Modernizing Health Savings Accounts Act.”
The Senate is set to consider the nomination of Robert Wilkie to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs and begin consideration of the fiscal 2019 Appropriations package: Interior-Environment, Financial Services and may consider funding for the Departments of Agriculture, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development.
Lawmakers have agreed to a watered-down approach to punishing Chinese telecom company ZTE Corp. Rather than using a must-pass defense authorization bill to ban the company from doing business in the United States, the compromise measure would exempt ZTE from government contracts but allow it to do business with private U.S. companies.
Two key nominees for financial positions are moving along in the Senate. Last week the Senate Banking Committee held its nomination hearing for Kathy Kraninger, Trump's nominee to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, bringing her bid closer to a committee vote. Also last week, the Senate Finance Committee advanced Charles Rettig's nomination to lead the Internal Revenue Service, bringing him closer to Senate confirmation.
House Republican leaders are preparing to bring up more votes intended to put Democrats on the record on controversial issues following last week's vote on ICE.
Georgia holds a primary election runoff on Tuesday, including the contest for the Republican nomination for Governor.
Trump will travel to Kansas City, MO, Dubuque, IA, and Granite City, IL this week.
On Wednesday, former Trump campaign Chairman Paul Manafort is set to face trial, beginning Wednesday, for charges of bank and tax fraud.
