NKE is a Mess

More firings yesterday at Nike regarding bad behavior in Beaverton. Unlike other companies where there is one individual as the scapegoat – in this instance it is blowing the whole organization wide open exposing the dysfunctional and (white) male-dominated culture that’s been in place since 1968. The irony is that there are not enough women running business units to have a material impact on product flow. But there will be more firings to come, and morale is a mess. #misogynistic

It’s gonna take a lot more than this to disrupt fundamentals. The HR process there is actually quite exhaustive. Every VP level or above has a folder with a line of command including replacements. There’s significant backfill, unlike at UA. But morale at this company is really important. People love working there, and the company (along with Intel) drive the entire Portland area. I think that, for now, this is a PR/political/market black eye more than a business driver.

But it is another one or two big 'gotcha' press releases away from actually being something your average company would note as a business deterrent. Even if it hurts the company, there's no way Nike will admit it.

Interesting how this issue has been largely isolated to the US -- in this industry and others.
