What a year.

…The U.S. stock market continues to make all-time highs.

…Equity and bond market volatility have been smashed to all-time lows.

…Cryptocurrencies continue their climb into the stratosphere.

“This is the greatest trading year ever,” says cross asset class trader John Netto.

Many investors lament this current market environment, saying it’s hard to beat the index because of the seemingly placid opportunity beneath the surface of broad equity indices.

If you like, blame the central bankers and their mammoth $14 trillion balance sheets. Or just keep digging and look ever deeper for opportunities around the globe.

“While there is less volatility, my investable universe is much greater and as a result of that I can identify opportunities as well,” Netto says in the interview above with Hedgeye Macro analyst Ben Ryan.

Netto is author of The Global Macro Edge, a book which attempts to turn conventional Wall Street wisdom on its head. He is an expert in developing, executing, and managing proprietary algorithmic and discretionary trading strategies across a range of time horizons, asset classes, and market regimes. Also notable, Netto served in the United States Marine Corps for over eight years and is a passionate supporter of Veterans’ causes.

In the video above, Ryan probes deep into Netto’s investing process, explaining what he calls the “Netto Number,” how he’s taking advantage of the low volatility environment.

Icing on the cake? Netto shares three specific investing ideas he sees heading into 2018.
